Side Effects is a smart, sexy and deceptive psychological thriller from celebrated director Steven Soderbergh. The movie centers on a depressive young woman (Rooney Mara), struggling to come to terms with the impact of her recently released, ex-convict husband’s (Channing Tatum) incarceration. Overwhelmed by her despair, she is assigned to psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) who, acting upon advise from her former psychiatrist (Catherine Zeta Jones) prescribes her a new brand of anti-depressive medication, ‘Ablixa’. Side effects of the new wonder-drug include extreme bouts of sleepwalking and it is during one of these episodes that something chilling happens and the movie takes a turn for the dark side.
Side Effects will thrill you and chill you and leave you fully satiated of your psych-thriller-mystery hunger. The film has a similar medical theme to Soderberghs 2011 masterpiece, ‘Contagion’ and features the familiar stylistic brand of separate yet interlocking stories and characters that has become synonymous with his name. If you are looking for an intelligent and gripping movie then Side Effects is for you!
